  2011 Mountain Arts Gathering Classes

Fiddle From Scratch - John

A supportive, non-threatening introductory workshop starting from \"this is a fiddle.\" Covers tuning, noting, bowing, simple tunes, sessions and a sense of humor; You’ve got to have that to get past beginning fiddling.

DADGAD Guitar - Bethany

This workshop will be an introduction to Irish-style DADGAD tuning. We’ll learn basic chord shapes with an emphasis on backing fiddle tunes. Building on the basic chords, we’ll explore alternate voicings, right hand technique, and chord theory. We'll learn to flat-pick several tunes, work out a number of chord possibilities for each, and talk about arrangements. Previous experience in DADGAD is not necessary (ie. we'll start by learning how to tune from standard to DADGAD). Please bring a capo.
Beginning Tin Whistle - Grey

If you have never played a tin whistle (aka pennywhistle) before, here is your chance to get started off on the correct foot and totally avoid the pitfalls of bad habits. Bring a small whistle in D (or low D if you prefer and can handle the big stretch), or purchase one of the D whistles I will bring along to camp. Feel free to bring a recording device as well. We'll learn how to relax and stay relaxed while holding, blowing and fingering the whistle and will learn some very simple tunes. If things progress well, we'll begin to learn the rudiments of traditional Irish ornamentation and phrasing as well. You don't need to know how to read music, though handouts will be available.

New England Fiddle - Lissa

This workshop is open to intermediate/advanced fiddlers. We will start with a brief overview of New England fiddling, its stylistic elements, and its history with musical examples. The group will then learn one or two tunes by ear each day, from the traditional repertoire. If time allows, the we will go over specific ornaments, and chords. All participants are required to bring a tape recorder or recording equivalent.

Beginning Guitar - Trish

Isn't it time that you added the guitar to your list of instruments that you enjoy playing?  Or dusted off that poor, abandoned guitar in your closet?  We can get you up and running -- or back up to speed.  We'll start in standard tuning, examining picking vs. strumming styles, bass runs, why capo?, barre chords by cheating (shhh!) and for real, and deciphering guitar notation.  Time permitting, we'll check out some scales for lead playing and / or improv, and some alternate tunings -- and requests from class members.  Oh, yeah -- you'll also learn a song or two!
Dance Fiddling  - Lissa

This workshop is open to all melody instruments at an intermediate/advanced level.  We will spend our time focusing on aspects of rhythm, style, arranging, and what makes a good dance musician.  We will learn a number of dance tunes by ear throughout the week.  All participants are required to bring a tape recorder or recording equivalent.
 Mandolin - John

This is an instrument that is so much fun to play, but don't tell anyone: we must keep our secret safe! This class will cover chords galore, rhythm in the right hand, tremolo technique, samples of music composed for mandolin by notable classical composers, and care and feeding of your mandolin habit.

Harmonica - Chris

For beginners, an introduction to basic harmonica techniques with emphasis on breathing, rhythm, and group playing. You'll be amazed at what you find yourself doing! For int/advanced players, techniques for rhythmic, multi-genre playing from a master mouth-harpist.
Vocal Harmonies - Cindy

Vocal Harmonies: If you love to sing, invent harmonies and want to feel generally more confident with both melody and harmony, come join this class! We'll mix a bit of theory in with a lot of practice, and do a bunch of improvising as well as learning already-set arrangements. No music-reading ability necessary.

Beginning Old-Time banjo - Trish

This traditional style originated in Africa, established roots in the southern mountains and caught on from tin-pan alley to Tucumcari. We'll start with a familiar song, a basic strum and a few chords in the key of  ‘G’. From there we’ll build a repertoire that will help us participate in jam sessions, work on playing melody and backup techniques. Why we’ll even try a variety of tunings and timings.

Inter/Adv Fiddle Repetoire - Rachel

An intermediate to advanced-level workshop that strengthens your fiddle repertoire with tunes from a broad array of genres, including old-time, Celtic, & other traditions.
Finger Style Guitar - Cindy

This class is for intermediate/advanced players. We'll pay close attention to both our right and left hands, shepherding them both to confident and creative ways of approaching accompaniment. Arpeggio, "calypso beat," "Thumb Something Thumb Something" and "tasting" strums will all be covered, as well as some left-hand variations to standard chords.

Int/Adv Clawhammer /Banjo - Pete

We'll have a grand time learning tunes  in a variety of tunings that show the very essence of stringband-style clawhammer banjo, West Africa's gift to our American musical smorgasbord. We'll tackle lean and mean melodies that grab just enough of the fiddler's line while leaving room for exciting rhythm adventures with such excitement generators as the riding thumb, the slide and  the open-string pull-off. Students should be comfortable with basic frailing aka clawhammer along with the drop-thumb technique.

Guitar repertoire/Flatpicking - Bethany

More  repertoire class than the “mechanics of flatpicking”, I’ll pick a sub-set of tunes each day and we’ll aim to get through 2-3 tunes within that style. Regions of tunes to be included: Irish, French Canadian, Scandinavian, French, and New England. We’ll learn the tunes by ear, but I'll hand out sheet music at the end (for memory sake) and include chords. This class is not necessarily guitar specific, so come if you just want to pick up some new tunes.

Shape Note Singing - Pete

Originally a music-reading teaching tool in New England, the unmistakeable hair-raising sound of shape-note singing  later hid out in the deep South for a century before returning enlivened many a  revival folk festival the world over. Never done in the context of religious services, the beauty and power of the texts combine with the open intervals sung with rock and roll intensity to move singer and listener alike. Songs from the most popular collection the 'Sacred Harp' as well as other current sources. Some sight reading ability definitely a plus but NOT required - complete willingness to let it all hang out in great company is a MUST!

Intermediate/Advanced Irish Flute and Tin Whistle - Grey

This workshop is for intermediate and advanced players of both Irish (wooden) flute and modern (metal) flute, and tin whistle players are welcome, too. Whistle players need to bring a D whistle. You should be able to play at least a handful of Irish traditional tunes up to a moderate speed. We will delve very deeply into traditional Irish ornamentation and phrasing techniques, as well as breathing strategies that enhance the phrasing and clarity of the music. No music reading is necessary, though handouts will be available. The emphasis will be much more on learning traditional techniques than on learning repertoire, though we will learn a few tunes. Please feel free to bring a recording device. There will be some wooden flutes on hand that you can try out, and some will be available for purchase. We will use material from the book "The Essential Guide to Irish Flute and Tin Whistle", and copies will be available.
